The Oracle

Greetings from campus at Ohio University! Spring semester is underway and we find ourselves over halfway through the 2014-2015 school year. In this issue of The Oracle, we recognize the generous support of alumni Andy Alexander and Beverly Jones to the Scripps College of Communication and The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. Following that, we have provided an article about the growing "Entrepreneurial Ecosystem" at Ohio University.
This newsletter also provides you with information about charitable bequests and how they may fit into your estate plans. As always, thank you for your support of Ohio University and I look forward to hearing from you!

Scripps Alumni Support of Innovation, Ideas

Couple Gives to the Voinovich School and Scripps College to Support Student and Faculty Innovation

Ohio University couple Andy Alexander and Beverly Jones, both seasoned professionals in the communications industry, believe one thing will always be constant: change. That's why they recently committed to establishing three funds through their estate that will help OHIO's Scripps College of Communication and The Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs keep pace with the future of innovative thinking, projects and technology.

Through her consulting work with The Voinovich School, Jones-who received her bachelor's degree in journalism in 1969 and her Master of Business Administration degree in 1975-experienced first-hand the school's exciting identity as a "do tank" as opposed to a "think tank." Click here to read more.

Grow Your Own: The Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

Over the past decade, with a boost from the state of Ohio's Third Frontier initiative, longtime university programs that support faculty research, technology commercialization, and business start-ups have partnered with government entities and private venture capital firms to create a pipeline for new hightech companies in the region.

Have a business idea? The ecosystem can provide help with developing a business plan, gauging a market for the product, patenting and protecting intellectual property, providing seed money and investments, connecting entrepreneurs with seasoned business advisors, setting them up with office or laboratory space, offering networking, and finally connecting them to advanced sources of funding such as angel funds or venture capital firms that can boost a start-up into the bigger leagues of business (pg. 28).
