Funding a Scholarship through an IRA Rollover

Dr. Maurice Warner came to Ohio University because it was a good school-and also because it was not Miami University, where most of his family had gone to school. A Bobcat at heart, he came to Athens because he wanted a different experience.

Maurice's years at Ohio University were memorable. In 1947,as a member of the Men's Independent Association, he helped set up and served as the director of the MIA movie program, which was quite successful in bringing weekly movies to Memorial Auditorium at a reasonable price. Maurice also met his future wife, Betty, in Athens, and he stumbled upon his life's pursuit. He was not originally very interested in geology, but classes with Dr. Myron Sturgeon changed his mind. Dr. Sturgeon was an exemplary teacher who was serious about his craft, and Dr. Sturgeon's field trips were the beginning of a long career in the field of geology for Dr. Maurice Warner.

In the years since Dr. Warner left Ohio University, the Geology Department has grown, and so has his desire to give back to his alma mater. Dr. Warner valued the quality yet affordable education he received at Ohio University, and he and his wife decided to pass along their love of learning to another generation. The Warners planned to leave their IRA to Ohio University as a beneficiary; IRAs are many people's largest asset, and they used to be notoriously inflexible. But recently Congress passed legislation allowing investors 70 ½ years old and above to transfer funds from their IRA to public charities, such as the Ohio University Foundation, without paying federal income tax on the gift.

Taking advantage of the recent legislation, the Warners decided to fund a scholarship through an IRA rollover for a student studying Geology. Maurice and Betty will be able to see their legacy in action. They hope that their donation will give someone else the opportunity to enjoy the intellectual journey that Ohio University's liberal arts education offers-and possibly to discover their own inner geologist as well.

The Warners were able to accomplish their goal of doing some good through an IRA rollover, while being fiscally smart. If you would like information on the IRA rollover or other ways to give to the Ohio University Foundation, please contact Kelli Bell at (740) 597-1819 or bellk@ohio.edu.

The 2010 IRA charitable rollover passed the House and awaits Senate approval. It is not currently available. Because it is very likely to pass this year, we ask you to continue to plan for a potential IRA charitable rollover in the fall of 2010. To learn more click here.
